Updates to dgl and hterm

By K2 on February 22nd, 2020 at 5:40 pm EST

We’ve been busy over the last couple days making some improvements to the NetHack playing experience. Tangles just finished a significant upgrade of dgamelaunch (dgl) which is the menu system everyone goes through to select the NetHack game/variant they want to play. You’ll notice that all available variants are now on the landing page again. You can also set your config editor preference, and there’s a more robust system to transfer configs between servers and even between other players.

Even more recently, hterm was updated to the latest version (1.87). Along with bugfixes is support for true 24bit color rendering. There are a handful of variants we host that support this, including 370-hdf and UnNetHack (you can confirm this in UnNetHack by issuing the #show_colors command). Any of you having issues getting hterm to work, it’s most likely due to your browser’s cache still loading the old .js files – performing a hard refresh of the cache while having the hterm page loaded will resolve it (ctrl+F5 for chrome/firefox/edge). If you’re still having trouble, shoot me an email or hop onto IRC and ask for help.

EDIT – the missing cursor in hterm issue has been resolved, use ctrl+F5 to force refresh the hterm window to load the change/fix.

Enjoy the changes and upgrades all.

The November NetHack Tournament has started!!

By K2 on November 1st, 2018 at 8:06 am EST

It’s official, The November NetHack Tournament officially kicked off at midnight this morning (UTC), or 8pm last night local time. We’re twelve hours in and there’s already been three ascensions, including a two-game streak.

To see the scoreboard and register a clan or join one, please visit https://www.hardfought.org/tnnt/ – there’s also an IRC channel on freenode.net, hop into #tnnt to see live game announcements and general player banter. We even have a twitter feed! See https://twitter.com/TNNT_announce for live game updates. To connect, access any of the three Hardfought NetHack servers via SSH or hterm and access the ‘Tournament’ menu.

So far so good. Kick off started with a bang, no major issues at all, just a couple look/feel tweaks to a few things and an update to the channel bot. Looking forward to a fun tournament! See you there.

New Tournament, other updates

By K2 on September 16th, 2018 at 9:42 am EST

Morning all. It’s about that time for another news update. All of the new things that we’ve been working on lately, I’ve announced everywhere but here. Should probably fix that…

The big news – ‘The November NetHack Tournament’ is on. We’ve been working on the code and the scoreboard for awhile now, and will be ready to kick it off at midnight (UTC) on November 1st. This will become the new fall season NetHack tournament to fill in the void left by /dev/null shutting down (the tribute tourney we hosted last year was a one-time event). The new tournament is based off of NetHack version 3.6.2 (bleeding edge) and will incorporate the latest bugfixes and additions to the 3.6.x branch right up until the start of the tournament – no further code changes will be made during the tournament unless it’s an important bugfix. The event will last the entire month of November, and there will be plenty of individual and clan-based achievements you can earn. We’re working on custom content as well… not every idea or plan we have will make it into the first years’ tourney, but that’s ok. This will be a ‘work in progress’ for years to come. I’ll make another announcement here and through the usual channels once player/clan registration is available. In the meantime, feel free to hang out in #tnnt on freenode.net to discuss the tournament. This is also the channel where game livelogging and github repo update announcements will occur.

Other NetHack related bits – our ‘vanilla’ versions of both 3.4.3 and 3.6.2 are now considered ‘hdf’ flavors due to cosmetic and server functionality additions to each that set them apart from the base code. 362-hdf is bleeding edge and is updated regularly as the NetHack devteam pushes new content and bugfixes. 343-hdf is a continuation of 343-NAO (which NAO no longer hosts) with mostly cosmetic improvements. Both ‘hdf’ flavors do not change or alter game play nor core functionality in any way. The public repositories for both can be found here and here.

There have been recent bugfixes to a lot of the other variants we host as well. Always a work in progress. That’s all for now, but more to follow soon.

/dev/null/nethack Tribute Tournament wrap-up

By K2 on December 10th, 2017 at 2:26 am EST

About ten days late on this post, but that’s ok. The /dev/null/nethack tribute tournament ended early on December 1st and ran the entire month of November. The tournament was a success, with 145 players participating, 12 clans and over 11,500 games played. You can read the breakdown of the stats on reddit or you can see for yourself on the tournament scoreboard here. All of the dumplogs and ttyrecs from the remote servers have been moved over to the main server and are linked to properly via the tournament scoreboard. Even though this was a one-off tribute to /dev/null/nethack, the scoreboard will stay up indefinitely to act as a permanent record.

Thank you to all who played and provided feedback before and during the tournament. That feedback went a long way in helping make the tournament a success. I think I only had to recover maybe 8-10 games out of the 11,000+ total. Special thanks to Tangles and Mandevil (game code and scoreboard respectively) who made this a reality.

So, moving forward – we’re definitely going to start hosting our own unique NetHack tournament around the same time next year. We learned quite a bit from this last one, and will be putting that knowledge to good use. Any ideas or suggestions you may have for the new tournament, please let us know.

That’s all for now, more news to follow soon…

Happy 17th birthday Hardfought!

By K2 on October 22nd, 2017 at 12:51 pm EST

Today marks Hardfought’s 17th birthday. This is the first birthday post in a long, long while that will have something more to acknowledge other than the passing of another year of existence. A lot has happened over the past several months that has basically revitalized the purpose of this server. With the help of several good friends in the NetHack community, we’ve started a multi-variant NetHack server, have successfully participated in Junethack 2017, and are about to host a one-off /dev/null/nethack tribute tournament in just a few days. And there’s even more things to come, and soon. Exciting times indeed ;)

The /dev/null/nethack tribute tournament is all set to start at 0700 hrs UTC on November 1st. We have everything in place now, and we could kick off the tournament today if we wanted to – we’re way ahead of schedule. With the remaining time we have left, it’s finding and fixing small bugs, tweaking, making adjustments, etc. Mandevil has done an outstanding job on the scoreboard and clan management web pages, which you can access via the menu up top (NetHack –> /dev/null), or you can link directly to it here. Tangles worked his magic, and made it possible for us to host three servers in total for the tournament – the main one here, another one in London, and a third on the US West coast that’s hosted by NAO (thanks dtype!). User accounts and logfiles are synced across all three servers, you only have to register an account on the main server, and within a minute it will exist on all servers. You can manually sync your rcfile from the main server to the remotes as well. You can also start building your clan now, and can send invites to anyone who’s already registered. For more information on how to connect to any of the tournament servers or any other functions or how-to’s, see the ‘About’ page on the tournament page I linked to earlier in this post.

So happy birthday Hardfought! See you all online…
