Website revamp (again)

By K2 on March 23rd, 2017 at 12:05 am EST

It’s about that time again. The bridge plugin (WP-United) I have been using here for years to integrate WordPress and phpBB 3.0.x had been abandoned years ago. WordPress kept updating, and luckily it did not break the plugin. The messageboard however, could not be upgraded any further. And as more WordPress updates kept coming out, the more sloppy patches I’d have to cobble together to keep the site running normally. I’m tired of fixing errors only to have more crop up to take their place, and I want to bring the theme up to something that’s inline with current standards (mobile friendly being a big one).

So right now, WP-United is gone. In it’s place is BridgeDD Pro, and it’s doing its job nicely so far. Cross-posts and user integration appears to have transitions seamlessly. This post will be the first test after the fact, verifying a lot of different functionality. The debug log so far is empty, which is good… haven’t seen an empty one in years ;) The WordPress portion of the site looks fine, although the sidebar widgets could use some work. The messageboard, while functional, needs some serious attention theme-wise. And eventually I’ll upgrade it to 3.1.x some point soon.

Lots to do…

EDIT – forums look much better now. This new bridge basically disables how the forum parses its theme and template files. You’re forced to hand-jam a few files to tell it where to look. Still some work to do, but we’re in a much better place.

EDIT #2 – forum has been updated to phpBB 3.1.10, which fixed a lot of other back-end issues not outwardly visible. I’ve also identified a small issue with why replying to a comment via WP to a cross-posted post wasn’t working. I’ve been hanging on to this theme *forever* which is causing the issues, it’s time to find a modern theme and edit it the way I want it to be. Still lots to do ;)

Hardfought’s new home

By K2 on December 4th, 2016 at 4:37 am EST

Back in August I mentioned that I was contemplating getting away from shared web hosting and serving the Hardfought website from my home. There’s no real reason to spend the money every year for a site that gets minimal traffic, and I have plenty of bandwidth here. So I bought the hardware a couple months ago, and found the time to finish the process. If you’re reading this, then your ISP’s DNS servers have received the update – Hardfought now lives in my basement ;) Had a few hiccups during the migration, but nothing I couldn’t handle. Long story short, phpBB3 and PHP 7.x don’t play nice. Found some tweaks and code fixes that resolved the issues I was seeing, so we’re all good. Learned quite a bit in the process as well, since it’s been over ten years since I’ve hosted a website locally… in a very real sense, we’ve come full circle after 16+ years of existence. Running Ubuntu server 16.04 w/ LAMP configuration. Hosting my business website on the same dedicated box. I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised with the much faster load times and smoother functionality.

Technically, I could throw a CS port on it as well, the amount of resources available are crazy compared to what we had available in the past. Hmm :)

Anyways. Next time you visit, post something. Dig into your profile, play with settings, etc. If you notice any bugs, lemme know. Thanks gang.

Sweet Sixteen

By K2 on October 22nd, 2016 at 6:00 am EST

Hardfought turns sixteen years old today. Imagine that ;)

So I’m actually writing this post a couple days early, and it’s scheduled to post on the 22nd. I’ve got drill this weekend, so I won’t be around to actually post or ‘celebrate’ if that’s what we do anymore when Hardfought gets a year older. Anyways, happy 16th Hardfought – on with the news.

I made a post a few weeks ago in the web server section of the forum outlining plans to move the website away from paid hosting, and to run it from a dedicated box from the house. We’re coming full circle after over a decade of hosting. The hardware is in, I just need time to put it together, get the OS and other components installed (Ubuntu + LAMP), get the domain pointed here and initiate the transfer. The site will understandably be down for a bit when I kick things off… hoping to get this done before Christmas. I’ll make the announcement before I initiate.

That’s all for now folks. Until next time…

Hardfought becomes a teenager…

By K2 on October 22nd, 2013 at 9:33 pm EST

Well, it’s happened. Hardfought officially became a teenager today. Happy 13th birthday to the site and the remnants of its community. Thirteen fucking years… holy shit. The average length of your typical American marriage doesn’t even come close to making it this far. Hah! Alrighty then. Well, again, happy b-day Hardfought. Let’s go sign you up for a facebook account, now that you’re old enough…

Belated Happy New Year

By K2 on January 13th, 2013 at 12:19 am EST

Hi all. Happy belated New Year!! Hahah… ok. I think we can all agree that it’s good to see 2012 put away and retired, time to usher in a new year. Lots of crazy shit went on, but at the same time I gotta say that 2012 will be one of my best years ever for the simple fact that my daughter was born in 2012. She’s eleven months old today, can’t believe she’s coming up on one year already. Those of you that are parents weren’t joking around, the time really does go by fast. I will NOT miss diaper changes… the faster that time goes by, the better :-) Anyways, I hope all of you had a great Christmas and New Years holiday.

Hardfought stuff – I have been fixing a LOT of look n’ feel stuff on the site over the last month (see the phpBB modification log for a lot of the fixes and changes). With WP-United back in full force from a couple months ago and being able to update the site, that really gave me the ‘bug’ again. I feel like I have a better handle on things this go-around, which is making things easier to identify and fix and/or tweak. Just resolved a glaring issue with private messages. Comments on the wordpress side look much cleaner than previously. A lot of areas now have a more polished and rounded look. So on and so forth. If any of you notice something that isn’t right that I’ve missed, please lemme know. I was looking back in the news archives, specifically back in the spring of 2009 when Hardfought got it’s first real overhaul… holy crap I remember a lot of the mess I had to fix back then, hah! Several of ya were pretty good at helping me find issues for me to fix… would be nice to see that level of participation again someday. Not a lot of traffic nowadays and that’s ok, I get it. Ah well. It’s all good.

So. Again, Happy New Year!
