Hardfought LAN #7 is a GO

By K2 on March 30th, 2006 at 7:08 pm EST

Alright gang, we finally secured a spot for our next LAN party, Pyrox has scripted us a brand new registration form… we got a public server again, Hardfought Clan is still in the playoffs… things are just lookin’ peachy yeah? ;-P

So here’s the scoop on HF LAN #7:

  • When – July 7th thru July 9th (Friday – Sunday). We’ll kick off with a lil get-together at a local restaurant near the LAN party site, have some drinks, see how much troucle we can get into, etc. Figure about 6pm for that. Then come bright and early Saturday morning at 9am, we’ll start the actual LAN party. We’ll go thru the night on into Sunday, and start tearing down/packing up around 5-6pm that evening.
  • Where – The GuildHall at SMU, at 5232 Tennyson Parkway in Plano, Texas (Dallas), 75024. You can find a map of the place at the GuildHall’s website at http://guildhall.smu.edu
  • Who – The signup form is on the left frame, in yellow. Real slick new form that Pyrox made for us. We have room for 200 attendee’s this year… yeah 200, wow ;-) After you signup and confirm, your name will pop-up on the attendee’s list. You’ll have the option to either pre-pay via PayPal ($12) or pay at the door in cash ($15). Be sure to check out the rules and FAQ section on the registration form, as more detailed info is put out there.

Now, some interesting details about this years LAN. One of the senior staff that works at the GuildHall runs a console gaming community, known as DFWgames (http://www.dfwgames.com). He is in charge of approving our LAN, and making sure everything goes smooth between us. Turns out his community was wanting to host another get-together around the same time. After talking for a bit, we decided it’d be beneficial for all concerned to combine our events. I know at least some of ya play console games like PS2, Xbox 360, and that some of his console crew play PC games as well. So this will be an interesting mixer of sorts. The LAN will be split up into three rooms (this is the plan so far anyways) – one for PC, one for console, and the third as a detox/chill-out room when ya just gotta take a break from gaming. The reason we’re going with 200 attendee’s total this year – I was only planning on 50 or so, but Ryan (the guy from The GuildHall) is expecting at least 100 if not 150. I’m thinking he’s not gonna hit exactly 150, so if we go a lil over 50, that should be fine. According to Ryan, the GuildHall has plenty of room to accomidate everyone and their systems. As far as games being played – ya’ll know what we’ll be playing (CS: Source, BF2), and on the console side, they’ll have games like Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, etc… mostly fighting games. I’ll have a more complete list of games being played in the FAQ on the registration form as I get the data.

Tournaments – there will definitely be fun tourney’s held on both the console and PC side. If you want to participate in one of these tournaments, make sure to bring a lil extra cash (five or ten bucks per) to pitch in. details about which games and the rules for each tournament will be posted as we get closer to the day of the event.

Alcohol, smokes, and food – You can bring your food and drink into the facility, and you WILL clean up after yourself before you go. Unfortunately, as per SMU campus rules, no alcohol is allowed on campus. And I would bet that no smoking is allowed inside, either. I’m sure tho that people will make accomidations to get their buzz on without breaking any rules ;-) And there’s always the pre-party that Friday, too.

Other stuff – I know some of ya are going to ask about monitors. There’s always somebody that can bring an extra monitor or two, so if ya need one, start a thread on our msgboard and ask. Internet access – I wanna say that YES, we’ll have it, but I’m not 100% sure about that just yet. I’ll let ya know as soon as I find out. We should be able to hook everything up to The GuildHall’s internal network for LAN play, but I’ll make sure some switches are brought just in case. Make sure you guys bring blank CD’s, and games/programs/mp3/DVD’s, etc so we can do some serious ‘backups’ of everything… hah ;-) Oh yeah… I’ll compile a list of all the hotel’s nearby and post them on our msgboard, maybe we can work out a deal with one of the local chains here.

If ya have any questions, ask me, and I’ll have an answer for you. can’t wait to see how many discussion threads pop up, I think the record for one LAN is six… hell, I dunno. Anyways, that’s all I got for now. So go sign up, and start making plans now. See ya in July folks ;-)

*BOOM* Headshot!

By K2 on March 27th, 2006 at 10:42 pm EST

Hardfought came into the playoffs with a bang winning pistol round on the Terrorist side. It was blow for blow after that with Knife taking the lead. With the score 8-6 Hardfought found themselves desperate for a round. Sandbox, Hardfoughts single remaining player, made shot after shot to close the round with an Ace.

The second half was rough. Knife won pistol round and the round following. On a save, Shade called an aggressive strat that allowed HF to steal the 3rd. Several more rounds past and HF found themselves 3-6 against a dangerous team. But they stepped up and took every single remaining round with the final score of 16-14 securing their victory.

Hardfought (#19) moves to round two of the playoffs where they’ll lock horns with “Kill with Honor” (#14).

Starting Line Up: Shade, Predator, Sandbox, Bl0wn and FFW Mayo.

MVP: Hardfought | Sandbox for his clutch/ace when every round counts.

Hardfought CS: Source server back… again

By K2 on March 24th, 2006 at 4:47 pm EST

Well… it seems over the years I have developed an addiction to having to have a game server in some form or fashion, hah ;-) I told Hardfought clan that if they kicked ass this season and made the playoffs, I’d bring back the public server. So it’s back, and it’ll go live sometime tonight or early tomorrow morning. This one isn’t my personnal hardware on what was supposed to be a superior network (looks at colo4dallas, ugh). We’re back with ServerMatrix (http://www.servermatrix.com) as our game sserver host/provider. This is the company that we started out with initially when CS: Source was still beta. It’s also part of the same company (theplanet.com) as Insomnia365 is, so it’s the same network, and so forth. Hindsight being 20/20, I shoulda just kept the server where it was originally with ServerMatrix when we first started, and just left it alone. Oh well ;-) Alright, so on with the details:

The IP address is 74.52.0.26:27015 or you can use css.hardfought.org to connect. From here on out, if for whatever reason the IP address ever changes, it’ll be bound to css.hardfought.org, so that’s all ya got to remember.
The server hardware is a single P4 – 2.8GHz system w/ 1GB of PC3200 DDR-SDRAM, with a 80GB hard drive. I’m thinking of upgrading the memory up to 2GB, should be a one-time fee to do that. Either way, we’re good.
Player stats will be handled by Psychostats again. This is the last thing I gotta setup, should have ’em ready to go by tomorrow.
I’ve installed a newer version of the Mani Admin plugin that allows for a few more cool things I think you’ll all enjoy, those being: a 45 sec warmup mode at the beginning of each new map – knifes and unlimited HE grenades only, open season on everybody, and you’ll respawn instantly within the warmup time block (you wont be punished for TK’ing during this warmup mode). This will give every player a chance to connect so they dont miss the pistol round, plus it’s a quick short breather between maps to go nuts if you want to. Alltalk will be enabled for dead players/spectators only, so all of ya can chat while waiting for the round to finish. If you wanna discuss team strats, just use private chat. I’m also working on a keyword you can type in ‘say’ mode that will tie in with psychostats so you can check your stats in-game. There’s a couple more things but these are the highlights.
Maxplayers will be set to twenty. Server tickrate will be set to 100 – yes, you read that correctly. I’ll post optimal client-side settings so you can take full advantage of playing on a 100 tick server (and these settings are already in the MOTD).
PTBx (player team balancer) will be included. I’ve tweaked the config a bit so hopefully it should be a bit more fair, and generate less spam to boot.
VIP Mod – yeah, you read that correctly too ;-) One of the cool things about the VIP Mod, is that it only activates when a map coded for the mod (read: an as_ map) is loaded. Otherwise it’s normal play as usual. So for right now, I have about 8-9 normal maps in rotation, and just one VIP Mod map, as_oilrig, in the line-up as well. There are two versions of oilrig right now… one that’s a straight copy of the original, and another one that’s done up real professional-like. You can guess which one we’re goin’ with. You’ll be able to get the map and all of the associated material/sound/model files that go with it via fast download in-game. However, I will make it available for download via our ‘Files’ section on the website as well. It takes about 3½ minutes to pull everything down in-game (the map isn’t exactly small) so be prepared for that. Luckily it’s a one-time deal. If as_oilrig goes over well with everybody, we’ll see about adding a couple other decent as_ maps to the mix.

I’m kinda excited about this launch. I’m hoping it’ll kick-off fairly well. I’ve added some things that you all have wanted to see before for some time now, so hopefully I can draw ya’ll back from wherever it is you’ve all been playing at, and we can all play together again as a community. This is also to support our team, who I might add have been kickin’ some serious ass this season in CAL-O. They made the playoff’s, and depending on how they do, may be selected to play CAL-M for next season.

Alright so… spread the word, and keep an eye out for the server to go live real soon. I did a lil trick with the hostname so it’ll show up near the very top of the in-game browser list now, heh ;-) See ya online folks.

The Playoffs? Part 1

By K2 on March 16th, 2006 at 1:32 pm EST

It’s been an exciting season for Hardfought. There have been some ups and downs but we’ve finally brought it to a close with a very satisfying 8:2 record. Does that mean we’re in the playoffs? Probably. We haven’t received the final invitation from CAL yet but we’re expecting it as the rest of the teams close their seasons.

Sixty-four teams will be chosen from the central conference for the playoff’s based on the following factors (in order of importance).
First, Division Ranking (did they win their division?). Hardfought placed fourth in Central Gamma, behind Just a Game, Extempore and Hard Clan. In the entire conference Hardfought is ranked #10.
Second, Points (Wins count for 2 points, ties for 1 point, losses for 0). Hardfought has 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 forfeit win.
Last is RPI. This is a ranking system that takes into account strength of schedule in deciding where a team stands. Hardfought’s current RPI is 0.692. Hardfought ranks 19th based solely on RPI in the central conference.

Teams are required to have no forfeit losses and no more than one forfeit wins. Up until last night Hardfought had 2 forfeit wins. The first was de_dust2 from week 1 and the second was de_contra on week 8. Burzum obtained permission from CAL to makeup week 1 with Virtual Assassins who was good enough to oblige us.

The match got off to a decent start with Hardfought winning their first pistol round in many weeks. Shade’s awesome strategies kept them guessing and let HF end the half with 13 points on the board. The CT started a little rough with VA putting up a few points in the first 5 or 6 rounds. But HF got their momentum back and rolled VA 9-6 for a final score of 22-8.

“Thanks again to Team Virtual Assassins for playing this makeup match with us. It’s been a huge help and we had fun both pre-game and during the match. They’re a good bunch of guys. Be sure to checkout their channel: #virtualassassins” ~Burzum

Roster: Shade, Bl0wn, Predator, Doubledown and Burzum.

MVP: Predator who dropped a 24 as a Terrorist and a whopping 33 on the CT side. It’s not all about the kills…but they sure do help.
