Memorial Day

I hope all of ya are having a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend. Myself, been having a pretty good time so far… been out to North Shore swimmin’ with the sea turtles, and kickin’ back and relaxing with friends, some of which I hadn’t seen in quite awhile.

Please take a moment during your celebrations to remember all of those who have risked and lost their lives to defend our homes and our way of life. For me… here’s to all the men I spent 13 months in the ‘sandbox’ with, to those who I made it back with, and especially to those who didn’t.

Cheater exposed

This is one of those kind of posts I don’t like to make, but I’m gonna do it anyways on principal.

A couple days ago, the Mani admin plugin we use was updated to include HLH cheat detection. HLH is one of the more popular hacks out there for both original CS and Source. After being installed for a couple days, I went to check the plugin logs for cheaters it had caught. Unfortunately, one of those caught was one of our very own admins, who was also one of our clan members :-(

So, I’m sure you can imagine my surprise. I did some investigating, and after that was all said and done, I was convinced that the person in question did in fact use HLH on our servers with the intent to cheat… for how long he had been doing this is anyones guess. Regardless, this person has since been removed from the clan, has been removed from the admin staff, and has been banned permanently from all of our servers, both public and private. The CAL has also been notified – his IP address and steamid has been submitted to them along with the proof I have so they know not to allow this person to compete with any other clan in that league. Fortunately for our clan, since I was the one who found out and contacted the CAL about it, and he wasn’t discovered to be cheating during an official match, we wont be penalized in any way. Our record will stand as-is.

One thing folks – I’m not gonna say who it was exactly. I’m sure those of ya that frequent the msgboard, IRC channel and servers will find out soon enough. Let’s just say there’s been enough drama over this internally already. I don’t feel like dealing with any more of it, at least right now. I’m still pissed off about the whole thing, and feel like mine and everyone else’s trust has been betrayed. I don’t like being played the fool.

Sooo… that’s that. Cheater caught, things go back to normal. Well, eventually at least ;-)

Oh, before I go… Charlie squad tryouts start this evening, so those of ya that Phoenix had picked out to tryout today, make sure ya get with him tonight before tryouts start. Good luck to all that participate. See ya gang.

HF clan Charlie squad tryouts, other crap

Man do I have a lot of shit to put out today… alright here we go…

As promised, the dates have been set for tryouts for our soon-to-be formed ‘Charlie’ squad’, and they are as follows:

    Thursday, May 26th, 7pm CST
    Saturday, May 28st, 7pm CST
    Sunday, May 29nd, 7pm CST (only if needed)

Phoenix will be in charge of the tryout process, so be sure to get with him via the messageboard or in IRC to show your intent and on which date you can make. The way the tryouts will work will most likely follow this format – we’ll grab five of ya and have you go up against five HF clan members, while other clan members spectate you. After we’re satisfied that we’ve seen enough, we’ll grab five more, rinse/repeat. Those who make the cut will be notified and an annoucement made soon afterwards… expect a couple days for that process to take place. Some things to be aware of for all of those who are wanting to tryout – while skill is obviously important, how well you can work in a team environment and your attitude will also be key factors in our determination on who makes the cut and who doesnt. So… good luck to all who tryout next week!

Server news – Valve released what as to be a ‘minor’ patch to CS: Source on the server side of things (no, the Terrorist hitbox issue was not addressed). Instead, this patch caused some severe issues and was making servers crash left and right. Valve just recently released a binary rollback of the initial patch, so everything should be good for now. However, one of the fixes to Source has broken the majority of the menu system in the Mani admin plugin we use. I messaged Alfred from Valve about it and his reply was that the plugin authors had been using a work-around hack to get those menus to display in the first place, and that ‘exploit’ has now been patched. So until Mani and other plugin authors go about the correct way of displaying and utilising those in-game menus, expect a lot of functionality to be broken.

Hardfought LAN #6 – the time is coming close gang… just a lil bit over a month til the event starts. I’m already starting to see a few people sign up now in anticipation. Keep in mind tho, I am about to tout this LAN as a ‘CPL boot camp’ as well – once that happens, we’re probably gonna see a lot of sign ups occur, especially within the last couple weeks before the LAN kicks off. So if you know you’re going to attend, it would be best to sign up now and secure your spot. Also, if for some odd reason you cant or wont pay via PayPal, you can pay at the door… just email me and let me know so I can count ya and secure your spot.

Personal shit – when I re-did my army contract to commit to our brigade switching over to Stryker (don’t know what that is? Google it) I knew we’d be going back to Iraq someday, but I didn’t anticipate that the date and timeline would already be set. August 2007 folks, that’s when I go back, and it’ll probably be another year-long deployment. So I got about two years and three months to party it up, hah ;-) Ah well… figured some of ya would be interested in that.

Game review – Freedom Force vs The Third Reich

If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one since it seems more like an add-on than a stand alone game. For those who haven’t played Freedom Force its a squad based superhero strategy game set in the 50’s. Like the first, both games have a cheesy comic book feel that only adds to the appeal. You start with a few heros and as the game progresses more join you, you also gain prestige points you can use to “buy” additional heros that aren’t part of the main story. The hero’s can be “levelled” up as they earn experience adding to their powers and purchasing select new ones, I say select because the pre-made hero’s have a selected set of abilities you can buy so they don’t deviate from their “character”. For newer strategy players (which I doubt we have on HF) it’s fairly intuitive, and has a walkthrough that’s helpful and is the beginning of the story rather than just some side thing that everyone skips. For the hardcore strategy players I’d recommend the higher difficulty levels, the standard level is a bit light. You can also create your own heros, with the hero builder tools although this is where I was disappointed there are very few original skins aside from the ones already used in the game and there is no easy customizing tool. Also its too easy to make an overpowered superhero that can breeze through the game solo leaving the other characters behind. For this reason I’d recommend sticking with the pre-made heros, there are quite a few in addition to the main story characters and they do add a bit to the story dialogue (rather than just being backdrop). There is a large modding community from the first game so it won’t be long until this game gets it as well, skins, campaigns, etc.

If you like superhero, or strategy games you really can’t go wrong with this one (although the cheesy banter might annoy some of the younger set) and it’s not $50 like everything else on the game shelf, most of which sucks but I’ll save that for another post.

Latest CS: Source update, new clan squad?

I’m sure you’re all well aware by now, Valve put out a rather large update to CS: Source early this morning. The update includes two new maps – de_port and a remake of the old classic de_inferno. For a complete list of the changes/additions made to the game, check out the news over at the steampowered.com site – http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=416 All of the Hardfought public and private match servers were updated within minutes of the update going live… de_inferno is now in rotation of HF1 and HF2, and both de_inferno and de_port are featured on HF3. My personal thoughts about the new maps is this – de_inferno is a much better laid out map than the custom job that was made weeks ago. The layout is a bit different from the original, but I think it’ll become a mainstay map, for competitive play as well as for public use. de_port is a fun map, but is very much like cs_compound. It’ll get a lot of play time in the coming weeks because it’s new, but I predict the novelty will wear off in under a month. We’ll see ;-)

Hardfought Charlie squad? Yup you read right… we’re looking to add a third and final squad to the Hardfought CS: Source clan, mainly due to the persistient interest in people wanting to join the clan. Phoenix, who was heading up Bravo squad, will step down after CAL season two to lead the new Charlie squad for the start of season three. One of our admins, PUPPY, is also joining the ranks of Charlie squad. This leaves five slots open for tryouts. HomingPigeon already made a msgboard post about it all; if you’re interested in joining, say so either in that thread or msg myself, Phoenix, or HP about it. We’ll announce tryouts here sometime soon.
