New version of OSP, Tournament Rules posted

By K2 on May 27th, 2001 at 4:50 pm EST

I got a couple news tidbits to throw your way today… first off, a new version of OSP, a match modification for Quake3, was released the other day… version 0.99u. This new version has a ton of bug fixes, enhancements and add-on’s… too many to list here. The Hardfought CTF/DM/TDM Match port has already been updated with the new version, so if your Quake3 clan holds matches/scrims there, be sure to update your version of OSP as soon as possible. UPDATE – make that OSP version 0.99u1… a couple glaring bugs were found that version 0.99u1 has fixed. The Quake3 match port has been updated accordingly.

Hardfought CounterStrike Tournament rules – I have posted a link in the Tournament section to the official rules set that will be used for our lil event here… :-P All clan representatives were emailed a set of these rules last night, but just in case… they’re available here for public viewing at any time. These rules also include the maps that will be played for our CS tournament… I think I got a nice mix in there. Anyways… they’re all there for quick reference. I’ll also start working on the functionality side of the winner’s/loser’s bracket this evening… such as when you click on a team name, you’ll get a pop-up window with their team info, roster, links and win/loss history.

I hope ya’ll have had a good weekend so far… see ya online.

Memorial Day weekend!!

By K2 on May 25th, 2001 at 5:17 pm EST

Heya folks… w0oP!! Weekend is here baby! Don’t have to work again ’til Tuesday :-P

Some Hardfought CounterStrike news for ya… Take a look over to the right, second box from the top. Move your mouse pointer over ‘custom.hpk file’ … oh hey look, a link! :-) Due to most all of the regulars asking for downloads to be turned off on the CS public port, I’m making the custom.hpk file available for public download so you can see all of the sprays in use on the port. It’ll be updated regularly as people send me more decals for approval. To install – just download the file and drop it in your ..\cstrike folder… it’s that simple.

Hardfought CS Invitational Tournament news – new link on the left in yellow, you can’t miss it. I finished the double-elimination brackets and structure last night, as well as seeding all the teams (this was done randomly, thanks to my lovely assistant HaDeS drawing each team’s name from a hat ;-) ). Be sure to check the msgboard forums here for a bit more details on how things are progressing. The team standings will soon have much more info… you’ll be able to click on each clan’s name to get team info, website links, members and current win/loss record in regards to the tournament… just to name a few :-) I still have work to do on it still, so check back often. Official rules as well as maps to be played per round will be sent off to all team representatives either tonight or tomorrow morning, and then that information will be displayed here soon after. I see a lot of typing for me to do in the immediate future :-P

That’s all I have for ya today peeps. CyBorge, from the Nexus clan CCTF team, is here in Dallas for the holidays with his brother… I’m supposed to pick him up here in about ½ an hour. Maybe I can take a picture of him while he’s sleepin’ and post it on the web… muhahah >;-) Have a safe and happy weekend everyone… see ya soon.

News, news… and more news

By K2 on May 21st, 2001 at 4:27 pm EST

Oh DAMN I know it’s been way too long since my last news post… bleh. At least I have a bunch of stuff to tell everyone about…

New members to the clan always get top billing around here. Clan Nexus is proud to announce two more members to the group – CryptiC and Cougar. CryptiC is joining our Quake3 CCTF team, while Cougar will be rounding out our newly formed CounterStrike squad. Welcome aboard fellas! Be sure to tell each of them congrats the next time you see ’em around and about.

Some good news about the Hardfought server reservation system… PUPPY finally came up with a solution to the join password chosen during a made reservation not staying during map changes on the CS match port. The new and improved system is up and running as I type. We’ve tested it extensively and ironed out all of the relevant bugs. So… from here on out, *any* reservation made for the Hardfought CS Match port – whatever password you select *will* be the join password to that server for the entire duration of your time reserved. Not kidding… it works this time :-) Soon we’ll enable this to work on the Hardfought CTF/DM/TDM Match port as well, and we’re already testing a version that will announce warning messages in-game when your reservation time is about to expire. Special thanks out to PUPPY for taking time off to help get this working correctly… good job, man ;-)

Server additions – yet once again, I’ve resurrected the Hardfought Quake3 Classic CTF port… same IP, port 27960. This was done in anticipation of the much-anticipated version 2.0 of that mod to be released soon, as well as the recently released Threewave Compilation Map Pack… all nine of the maps in this new map pack are available for play on the CCTF port. This map pack has some extremely well-made maps in it… be sure to download it from our ‘Files’ section and give them a try.

Latest results from our last voting poll shows that the majority of you would like the ability to vote in both awp weapon restriction as well as voting in pistol-only rounds on the public CS port. I was going to enable that script, however, it spams *way* too much info to the client… like every minute it calls for a vote. I’d still like to add this script to the CS public port, but until it’s been redone, I figure we can do without. I’ll be starting another voting poll soon… just need to decide what questions to ask :-) Oh yeah… just an FYI for ya – map voting on the CS public port has been changed slightly. It still only takes 40% of the players on the server to initiate a map change, but the voting frequency has been changed from once every 5 minutes to once every 20 minutes… this should cut down drastically on the amount of spam map-voting that I’ve seen players complain about. Hopefully no more maps that last only 5 minutes each time they’re loaded.

Ok… last but not least… the Hardfought CounterStrike Invitational Tournament news update. Yesterday I listed on the msgboard forums here the clans that have been chosen for the tournament. Those clans are pX, KD, FDA, ExE, VV, wtf, LCD, 3dL, HFC, db, TsK and nx. Most of those clans have already sent me the required info I need to help kick this off in a timely manner. For those that haven’t – I need your info by the end of this week. If I have not received confirmation by then, your spot will be taken, and we do have a waiting list of clans wishing to participate. Official rules and the maps chosen for the tournament will be posted here soon, as well as sent out to each clan representative. If everything goes smoothly, we should be able to kick this tourney off sometime around the first week of June :-) Stay tuned for *much* more info about the tournament soon, and good luck to all of the clans who have been chosen!

That’s all for now… and I promise another news post soon, like in the next couple days… heh :-P Gonna update the clan roster as well as clean up some other areas of the website. See ya online folks…

Hardfought turns 6 months old today!!

By K2 on May 11th, 2001 at 9:01 pm EST

Hardfought turns six months old today… I honestly never thought I’d last this long and have things going as well as they have been. I remember late last year, sitting down with HaDeS, trying to think of a name for the server and what games we’d run on it and stuff. If anyone had asked me then if I’d be running a CounterStrike port I probably woulda rolled outta my chair from laughing so hard :-)

I just wanted to take this time to say Thank You Very Much!! to everyone who’s helped make Hardfought what it is today, and what it’ll grow to be in the future… everyone from the admins that help me keep the level of gaming quality high on the game ports to the players who frequent the server and the message boards here. Without any of ya, none of this would be what it is today. Sooo… thank you again, very very much :-) Hopefully the next six months and beyond will be just as good if not better than the last six.

To show my appreciation to everyone… and I know it’s a small gesture but it’s the best that I could think of at the time… I am announcing the Hardfought CounterStrike Invitational Tournament. I’ll be inviting twelve clans to participate in a double-elimination CS tournament, complete with a winners/losers bracket and (pocket-book willing :-P) prizes for the top team winner, and maybe the second and third-place teams as well. I’ll announce the details later this month… hopefully next weekend. If things go smoothly we can probably kick this off and have teams start playing as early as the end of this month. And if this tournament is a success, I’ll host another, larger one, and try to get a sponsor or two to help out with prizes.

Stick around folks, and if you’re in a clan and play on Hardfought a lot, lemme know about it. Things are gonna start getting a bit more exciting around here :-)

New member to Nexus CS team, new maps, etc

By K2 on May 6th, 2001 at 4:05 pm EST

Oh my… been over a week since our last news post… gah! :-P

To start off, I’d like to officially welcome MeMGhost^KS to the Nexus CS squad. He’s an excellent team player and all around nice guy, and should make a nice addition to the team. Tell MeM congrats the next time you happen to see him around :-P I may be making another announcement here soon about an addition to our Classic CTF team to help replace a couple people we lost (and miss)… so stay tuned.

I’m sure those of you that frequent the Hardfought CounterStrike port have been following our little game stats drama as it’s been unfolding… heh :-) I think I’ve got this sucker nailed down almost. What I’m about to mention I kinda already posted on the message forum here, but I’ll post it here, too… just for good measure. After resetting stats and squashing a couple odd bugs that were keeping people from being ranked, I had noticed that some stats were still not being recorded, even after accounting for a few log files that ½ Life doesn’t close properly. So… I changed the method that halfStats uses to parse the logs. Instead of saving already processed data and adding to it on each subsequent pass, I’m having halfStats read the log files fresh… every single time now. It appears the way that halfStats stores past processed data and adds to it is broken somehow, because running stats fresh everytime seems to be *very* accurate… even the logfile size indicator is displayed correctly. The only downside to this is that it now takes a very long time to run stats… last count was 27 minutes on a batch of logfiles only 6 days old :-/ Because of this, I’ve changed the scheduling on when stats run for the CS ports – it’s now one every 3 hours for the public port, starting at 12:00am CST, and once a day on the CS match port, starting at 10:30pm CST. Hopefully beta 8 of halfStats will help resolve the database issues and allow me to run stats effectively on an hourly basis. I guess we’ll see, hopefully sooner than later.

A new voting poll is now up… I’m asking to see if you CS die-hards would like to see AWP weapon restriction and pistol round only voting enabled on the public port. I can do this easily via an Adminmod plugin… it would allow you to vote to have the AWP restricted per map, and would also allow you to vote on whether you’d like to play a map in pistol round only mode or not. If the majority of you vote YES to having either of these, the vote percentage will have to be fairly high on the server to get it to pass (80% or more most likely)… I don’t want these modes of play on the public port enabled unless the majority of players there want them. Anyways… go vote, I’d like to see whatcha think.

From last months voting poll, the majority of you said YES to having that new map pack loaded on the server. So… May 13th is the day, folks. Next Sunday, all the maps in the new de map pack will be available for play on both CS ports. These maps include cs_galleon-f, cs_india, cs_rio, de_barain, an altered version of de_heat, de_seaside2k, and as_rising_sun. Be sure to get this map pack *now* so you’re not stuck downloading them at a snail’s pace in-game from the CS port next week. As always, you can get this map pack from our ‘Files’ section. NOTE – de_heat in this map pack is slightly different from the de_heat from the Planet Half Life map pack… come Sunday, if you haven’t installed this new map pack and de_heat comes up in rotation, you’re probably gonna have problems. Just an FYI for ya.

Custom sprays – yup, I turned ’em off again… sorta. Some of the content being uploaded is just not appropriate, so… if you’d like your custom spray to be seen and used on the CS public port, send me your pldecal.wad file (or whatever you’ve named it) via email to I’m using a program called ‘Wally’ to view the .wad files so a separate image file isn’t necessary. Also, don’t just send me an image file… I don’t have time to make your logo’s for you :-P After approval, I’ll upload your .wad files to a test server and then copy that server’s custom.hpk file to the public port. Download’s are still enabled so you’ll be able to see other people’s custom sprays as well… but to get ’em there you gotta go through me now :-)

To wrap up… Hardfought’s 6 month anniversary is coming up on the 11th of this month. I’ll be doing another news post that day and hopefully I’ll have something kinda special planned for everyone. I’ll keep ya posted. See ya online folks…
