So since getting my new laptop (see news post) I have been able to bring my ASUS VG236 out of storage and start using it again. It's a 24" LED monitor that can support a refresh rate of 120Hz, but I can only use it at 60Hz because my only option to hook it up is via HDMI. Anyways. I've noticed if I sit in front of this beautiful monitor for more than an hour or so, I start to get a wicked headache and it feels like it's behind my eyeballs. Pretty nasty feeling. So I started researching why I would get these headaches, turns out a lot of these high-end LED monitors flicker. Not anything you'd notice directly, it happens so fast you can't perceive it directly. To save energy and extend the life of the LED's in the display, they turn on/off very quickly. And if the frequency is just right, it can cause eye strain and headaches. Bleh.

So. I'm gonna sell my 24" ASUS on eBay. If any of you want it, lemme know, maybe you're not as susceptible to LED flicker as I am.

Look at my latest news post sX, that new laptop I just got was for just over $600. Thing is a beast.
Re: Monitor causing headaches and eye strain
Bah, that's nice and all, but i HATE Intel gfx. Damn, 600 though? not too shabby. I just want something to run at least CS:GO w no lag issues. :/

Re: Monitor causing headaches and eye strain
I think I might try out CS:GO and see how it performs. Intel's HD 4000 gfx part is fully capable of running modern games (DX 11, opengl 4, etc), but its performance is directly linked to how fast the processor it's embedded with is. You can get an i3 or i5 CPU with HD 4000 but it wont perform as well as one mated to an i7 series CPU. That's the catch. The HD 4000 coupled with an i7 series CPU can outperform nvidia's and ATI's low-end and even some of their middle of the road dedicated chips.
Re: Monitor causing headaches and eye strain
In case anyone is curious - I sold the monitor. New one I grabbed is a Samsung SyncMaster E2420. WAY better on my eyes than the other one. Picture looks great, nice a crisp. Matted screen to minimize glare. And it's an LCD, not LED so no more crazy eye strain. I can sit in front of this monitor for a long time, no issues. Got it for $160 new.
