Guild Wars 2

Postby Timmy » Jun 2nd, 2011 at 1:00 pm

After plodding through WoW for about a year I quit out of sheer boredom, this http://www.guildwars2.com/en/ will be my next mmo. Looks VERY promising and "fresh" not just "look we're WoW but better" like everything else coming out, or relying on a single gimmick "you can fly!". It has lots of features that remind me of the early Ultima Online days, free form grouping, no set tank/heal/dps roles, and although it has levels it will have features that make playing with lower/higher level pals doable without the higher level just dragging the lower through stuff. Events that actually change the game world (sad that Ultima Online did this like a decade ago, and no mmo has done it since....). Dodging actually means dodging, not just another number that affects hit rolls, no screen covered with so many icons and add-ons that you can't see whats going on.

Anyone play GW that can chime in about the company? Do they update well? Do they knuckle under to whiney players?

ArenaNet has seemed pretty reliable and consistent in my small amount of experience with them. I have just about everything in Guild Wars (as far as expansions etc). Though, if they are going to do it like GW1 and have no monthly charge and run a store, it can get kind of expensive. :P

(You may or may not have seen these videos in this post, but since it's the GW2 thread, I'm gonna put some in here, cause this game is really looking awesome.)
This first video is directly related to your question, Timmy. It was actually uploaded to YouTube the day I replied, but it was so new I hadn't even seen it.

ArenaNet Retrospective Trailer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArenaNet wrote:The founders of ArenaNet were former employees of Blizzard Entertainment who played important roles in developing the highly successful computer games Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, Diablo II, and the Battle.net gaming network. Their new studio was briefly called Triforge, Inc.[4] before changing its name to ArenaNet and being acquired by NCsoft.

I've done some digging since I first posted, this one is definately on my next mmo list, so far its shaping up to be everything I want in an mmo. Not espousing pretty leaf physics, or promising to be WoW but better (looking at you Rifts), its going in an entirely new direction, even the mechanic I find lamest: Levels is more about how many skills you have available and less about being "bigger". Also loving that you can make what gear you wear look like other gear in the game, so you can tailor your look and still get the stats you want (no more looking like a clown with downs syndrome dressed you when optimizing gear). No lame collosally oversize weapons for the basement dwellers to compensate with either ;) (sorry sX).
