Quake IV has gone GOLD

Postby K2 » Oct 5th, 2005 at 12:29 am

The date is October 18th - http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/38922

What fails to impress me is that they are modelling the multiplayer after Q3-style play. I was really really hoping for a shift back to the good ol' days of Q2CTF but I am betting this is not to be.

Ugh :?

HAH... 'vanilla' ctf that came with q3 was deathmatch w/flags, period.

A lil history folks... before Hardfought existed, I used to play in and with the top q2ctf clans in the midwest and east coast. When q3 came out, there was a huge rift in the community... some decided to just grin and bear it, others just quit completely. When the mod q3 'Classic CTF' was made, a lot of the old-timer ctf scene came back to play. Hardfought was just months old at the time; I was running primarily q3ctf, q3cctf, rocket arena, instagib and then later q3ctf team arena (marginally better than vanilla ctf) along with cs 1.0. HF had its q3cctf/RA clan, known as 'Nexus' and we fuckin tore it up on cctf - top dog for a long time. Unfortunately cctf was a day late and a dollar short, and support for it lasted maybe 12-15 months tops.

A LOT of the old q2ctf community and a significant amount of the q3ctf community have been waiting for the next installment of Quake, hoping that the multiplayer experience would be put back to the way it used to be with Quakeworld and Q2CTF. From lil tidbits I've gathered from here and there, I dont think it's gonna happen :(

If I had the money, the staff, and the skill, I would fuckin buy the rights to the game from Carmack and do it right... wouldnt care if it took an extra year to make it happen. I fail to understand how these game authors have a complete and utter lack of understanding what the majority of players want to see and play. Just boggles the mind. Example - GearBoxSoftware and Halo for PC. Don't even get me started on that shit...

just quit completely.

That is me. I played Q3 some, but never liked it like I did Q2. I remember playing on dial up and having to lead my rail shots due to lag. I would love to have some video showing me leading targets. I would often have to lead by as much as an inch or more.

When you pulling up the Q2 server K2? Count me in for some play time on it. I do prefer laser trip mine and the old style grapple tho :)

Did you ever play on the Webzone or BusProd servers? Webzone was always packed, there was a guy named Bishop who ran the server and was the best Q2 player I ever saw.

I remember when 3way came out. That f'n rocked (trying not to swear so fucking much).

I never got tired of running thru the single player as a coop either. That was a hoot. I remember playing on a cheap 4 port hub that would blink out on me periodically.

Nothing compares to modem to modem direct connecting to play Duke Nukem

I'm still holding out hope

Quakeworld Team Fortress was the SHIT. That's where I got my online FPS start. Heh, I still even have a lifetime GameSpy 3D subscription (when they offerred them for $20). Before that, I'd done a lot of LAN gaming. I was a Duke3D GOD, and none too shabby at Quake either. We used to have Duke3D matches several times a day in our computer lab throughout high school. QWTF had a really solid community though... we should put up a server. :)

how about starting with a vanilla Q2 DM server to get us in the mood then swapping around to different mods for a couple weeks?

You guys could post info about "retro month" or something. Do a week each of Q2 DM, ctf, 3 way ctf, Lith, instagib (my favorite), laser trip mine, and so on. I remember fearing some of the bots that were out.

They didn't read this. Its been featured here before but if game execs would read this shit, they would make a shitload of more money.

Q2 CTF was some fun shiznet. Probably the most fun I have had in an FPS ever. Luckily by that time I was on the early cable internet bandwagon. I remember buying dual SLI voodoo cards...those were the shit.

Playing Quake1 online fun as well, although at that time, the net code was just really bad. It was pretty laggy stuff no matter what connection you had.

Quake3 was pretty lame in comparison.

action quake 2 was my college crack. i actually played a round of doom2 i think against romero on dwango once... anyone remember dwango? bbs multiplayer? and when hexen came out and we were all blown away by the graphics?

i used to be consistently highly ranked in action quake2. i was in FTS and then SF and kinda STS and then I gave up the crack pipe.

Quake 2 ctf was ok, but not that great. It was too easy to be dominant. I was also like K2. I played the shit out of q2 ctf. The 12 Pack Club (12PC) was completely into Q2 Ranked on M-Player. The problem was, I could play against 10 guys and win with teh grapple hook. It was not that fun. I think Q3 CTF was just fine. Capturestrike particularly is/was very entertaining. I am excited to play quake again, although a q3 replica with updated graphics is really not that cool. I would like to see more a mixture of q2 and q3.
