I've got a friend going to Peru in a couple weeks. I'll give him the heads up.

tell him be VERY careful where he eats. this is my 8th day here and ive been sick for 6 of them. a whole smorghasboard of illnesses ((diarrhea, fever, sore throat ... currently have a fucking EYE INFECTION)

tell him be very careful where he eats ceviche and also be very careful about the local water ... never, ever drink tap water. i would even recommend washing teeth with bottled water.

dont eat veggies (especially salad) unles you're eating at very reputable places.

also, unless he's peruvian he will get ripped off most everywhere. doesn't matter if he speaks spanish - 3 out of 4 of us speak spanish fluently and one is even a peruvian and we're getting ripped off.

so far they've managed to steal our digital cameras and my buddies backpack.

fuckin' peru. im still hanging in because i want to see machu picchu.

and i know that if i dont do it now i aint ever coming back to this shithole.

I've been on 5 continents (that includes North America). When traveling to cities where poverty is rampant:

Do NOT drink the water, no tea, cokes with ice, the ice cubes can get you sick. Just drink beer.
Do not use cash, use travelers checks and credit cards.
Do not leave valuables around in plain sight. This includes walking around with a camera around your neck, watch on your wrist or that gold chain.
Do not have sex with prostitutes. (I hope I'm not to late Puppy).
Walk around in groups, the larger the better.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I CAN TELL YOU PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY: *Try like hell to hook up with euro chicks there on holiday*

Americans are all rich as far as the natives are concerned. You will be a target unless you keep your head on a swivel. You will get taken advantage of even if you have the same heritage because you are still american. It just another case of "the man" keeping us down.

except for the two of those rules we pretty much follow them. we need to travel with cash as no one around here accepts credit cards or travelers checks.
