Black Friday Laptop Dilemma....

OK.... i need some help...

My wife and I don't necessarily have tons of fundage available... but a $400 laptop is kinda hard to pass up...

HP Pavillion ze2308wm Notebook Computer:
1.6 amd... 40gb... 256mb (which will be upgraded to 756 right away).... dvd/cdr.... 802.11g.... 15"

i'm not looking for a desktop replacement...(just upgraded my current comp)... were just looking for something to roam around the house... or take it to web design meatings or on trips... allow my wife to do her work on the floor... ( she loves to sit on the floor... no idea why)...

I like HP's, i love AMD's... but i'm learly about it being only 400 bucks... should I or shouldn't i?

Jay: can you give me any Wally world insight into this???

So what would you guys do?

go to www.pricegrabber.com and check out all the Dell laptop rebates and discounts. You can prob put the same deal together there on a Dell and I'd take a Dell or Toshiba over an HP/Compaq any day.

I have never seen a dell at 400 with no rebates before.... that's what the wallyworld deal is. And i've never seen a dell with an AMD. :)

i know Best Buy and Wally World both have a laptops for just under $400, but i havent really been following ads at all.
Servers gone and all of a sudden people have opinions of K2, weird

If you have to have AMD you will find all kinds of bargains on www.pricegrabber.com. If you want Intel its going to cost more. The rebates are almost all "applied at time of purchase" on the Dell stuff. Check out techbargains.com before you do anything. Its worth the time.

I'd take a Dell or Toshiba over an HP/Compaq any day.

I have noticed the oposite with dells. When I did tech support the dells were always the ones coming in broken. I agree Toshiba is probably the best you can get though. Dells always just felt too flimsy to me compared to HP's or Toshibas. Especially compared to my Apple.

If I were buying a windows laptop now I would probably be looking for something with a PM/Centreno instead of AMD. That might add a price premium though.

The older dell's were not very structuraly sound. They had a couple of real pos's also. The newer laptops are very nice and very well built. Most of the internals are Toshiba so that is a +. I did support for a 3rd party contractor for two weeks. The Dell support contract is 24hr turn around from time of call. The Compaq/HP support is 62hrs. Dell also sets up times for appointments and Compaq will call you when they are headed your way. Its been about 4 years since I did that kind of work so it could have changed. I have 40+ HP laptops at work. All run P3 800Mhz cpu's. They are pretty rugged/tough. They run like hammered shit. They also have a problem with the audio dieing out on every model we have along with the LCD screens starting to fade.

I have about 3 Toshiba laptops at work of the same general age and they are just as good as new.

Yah, I haven't done support in about 1.5 years, and this stuff changes so fast it's hard to stay on top of it. There is only one constant: don't let them put an IBM hard drive in your laptop.

QFT! or the 20Gig or below Hitachi/IBM drives.

You guys read about the 500Gb Hitachi SATA drive that is almost as fast as the 10kRPM drives and its only 7200RPM?

Tomshardware.com gave it a pretty poor review, but everyone else seems to love it.

dell = ass for laptops. They like to test the hardware combos they sell their business/enterprise customers on consumers which is part of the reason why thier laptops suck. the other part is the manufacturing.

Toshiba is solid. Or Sony. Or IBM (they can't be beat for business).

Stay away from Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq, etc.

Are you speaking only about laptops Puppy? I haven't dealt with a dell laptop since mine is a toshiba. But my dell desktop is pretty boss. No problems yet and I'm still ahead of the curve after a year.

Dude.. Sonys are POS's sorry. I've supported many makes and models and neither their desktops nor their laptops are worth a shit. I do agree that Gateway is by far the worst pos I have ever had the pleasure of fixing. Where did you read that Dell likes to test its hardware combos on consumers? I'm not questioning you, I just haven't heard that.

Dell used to make the exact same laptop for home and bussiness users minus the pin out for the docking station. You could knock out the pin and it would work in a corp. docking station (but voided warranty). The business model was C800, C600, and C650 that I was working with back then. Again, this all could have changed since then. If I was going to buy a small laptop I would buy the Dell L or C series in a heart beat. I've deployed 2 of them and they are very nice, stable, and good performers via all benchmarks I have ran on them.
I have not done much with IBM but everyone I know says they are realy good laptops. Their desktops leave much to be desired in the performance arena. This may have all changed since IBM sold out its hardware line to a 3rd party company.

I personally will be getting the Wal-Mart laptop myself. I am going to use it to keep me busy during class. It should work fine for word, excel, coding, etc.

i have worked on a lot of laptops but Sony's never seem to fail - may just be my experience though.

The Dell thing was told to me by a guy who purchases a lot of dell business products so i'm kinda taking his word on it. I've seen so many consumer dell laptops with problems it's not even funny. Their desktops seem to be ok though.

Thanks all for the thoughts! I know each vendor has issues. Seriously... i know people(including you guys) that say this brand sucks, this brand rocks... over the course of the last couple years i've heard bad and good things about almost all vendors. (haven't heard anything bad about intel... but i can't afford those).

So i guess the real question is: is this $400 HP at wallyworld a good deal or not? I guess i'm just looking for more information...

What about tech support? Does anyone know if they have an extended warranty? (how much?) What about battery life? i can't seem to find ANYTHING on it... i'm hoping JayPhat has some insight... JAY??? HELP!!!

Let's say it's a $400 laptop with a 1 year warranty. Should i do it?

with ANY laptop buy the extended service contract - 3 years. If you buy that, then go for it.

If you drop it you aren't going to be able to return it anyway. Most laptop warranties are total crap. The dell laptops that are realy cheap only offer 90 day warranties unless you pay $$.

I'd buy the chepest laptop you can find and not worry about warranty. If you start worrying about warranties then you might as well go ahead and shell out $700 for a laptop. Just remember that if the laptop lasts you a year, you will be able to buy another one if it dies for less money and better performance. Laptops are dropping in price very rapidly now.

store-bought warranties ROCK! Best BNuy's I can attest to and I always recommend people get them for laptops (which seem to have a higher problem rate than desktops) ...

I price match other wal-marts where I live. I'm in Oklahoma and live on the arkansas state line. Depends on the clerk you get sometimes also. It's worth a try.

I got a Dell Inspiron 9300 about 10 months ago. This has been a solid laptop and has been able to play every game I have put on it (including high end games released within a month). Quite a few of the techs where I work also have various Dells (Inspirons and XPS) from within the last 2 years. I don't know what you are basing that information on, Puppy, but all of the techs here really like their Dell laptops and have had very few if any out of the ordinary issues with them.
