New Budget Build(opinions please)

Postby PumpActionJackson » Jan 23rd, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Well guys its time for me to upgrade again, but as always I figured I should post up and get an opinion from some tech savy folks before I jumped off the deep end.

When posting opinions keep in mind this build is on a < $500 budget.

Cpu = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819116036 (Overclocked to 3.0ghz, http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/09/12/ ... dual_core/)

Mobo = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128059

RAM = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231098

HD = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148262

Vid Card = Either http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150247 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127286

Case/Powersupply = http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... 1&CatId=32

Well gentlemen please post your opinions/suggestions (keeping budget in mind of course).

And I know for an extra $100 I could get a much better VGA/HD but I would ideally like to stay at $450-500 ish range.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Pump

for a budget build that system looks pretty good, if you are able to spend an extra $100 you might want to check out an ATI Radeon 3850 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129102 ) 256mb versions are roughly $30 cheaper

I'm currently running a 3870 upgraded from a 8800gts and I couldnt be happier

I am about to pull the trigger on the same thing. I found a barebones system with am E2160 processor and motherboard that is a proven overclocker with case for $158 shipping included. I'll clock it up to 3-3.4 ghz. Newegg has 2 gigs of PC6400 for $35 after $10 rebate. I'll save another $175 for the video card. Fortunately I already have a couple of drives laying around. Or I may buy a lower end card for now and upgrade to a mobo that supports SLI so I can add another card later.

It chafes me that I have to run TF2 in 1024x768 and that even on the lowest settings COD4 gives me about 12fps.

I've been keeping an eye on this..

I'm so tempted to bite the bullet..

Only problem is that I have 2 patas and one pata dvd-dl-cdrw (etc) ..

Hard drives are cheap nowadays and I suppose i can hold off on the gfx card because I have a 7300gs laying here (pcie) and just purchase a raptor :p.

Also ram is an issue here.. I only have around 500 to spend as well and I'm long overdue for an upgrade.

Current specs:

Abit NF7-S 2.0
AMD Barton 3.2 GHZ
2 Gigs of ram (standard ram at 3200)
Nvidia 6600 AGP 8X

Like I said.. long overdue for an upgrade..

I suppose I'll bite the bullet when my tax return comes in..

However I'm curious to know what other motherboards are out there that are better than this? I'm NOT an overclocker and like to run things at default speed.. except maybe I think I'll overclock the Intel CPU if I have to.. but does this shorten the life of the CPU if I do so?

Let me know..

Keep an eye on Newegg.com - I have seen PC6300 2gb kits for under $40 after rebates.

Hopefully I'll have this by the time the next HF LAN hits. Out of a job now, but I figure my old rig lasted me 5 years, this is definitely a good investment and at a low price! Bills payed off til June, so I'll bite the bullet when my tax return comes in. Hey, maybe prices will drop a lil more by then.. ;p

We'll see.

I quit BB a while ago and worked for Sony til I left in December. Was fun though.. I mean now that I look at it, BB was a very active social life - - with 19 year olds. Now that I've been in a stable relationship for some time now and go to these 'BB Parties' I've noticed I've matured a lot..

Still though.. 19 year old ass... mmm .*ahem*...

lol..

A good friend of mine is a supervisor there though, so I don't think I'll have problems if I need a discount.

Retail was great. Low pay, long hours, nights, weekends, holidays. Same old grind of moving from one holiday to another. Same old vendor crap T-shirts and mugs. I miss it like I miss painful rectal itch.

Check out this deal on quad core stuff

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/ ... =CANEM1069

not sure if it qualifies as budget but it would make the basis for a really nice system.

I got a VisionTek 2600 Pro AGP 512. I expected a nice performance boost from this card, but I can't even play HL2 or a NFS: Pro Street demo. Sucks ass. I've had SO many problems with this card since I've installed it. It was free and is better than my PNY 6600 256 (Not GT or GS) to some extent.

Can anyone recommend settings in the Catalyst section? Like what to turn on and off?

I'd appreciate it.

God I love Nvidia, but this was free. F it.

Going to purchase a X1950 though.. but I'm hesitant since I've had so many f'ing problems with this card..

That card's specs are ridiculous.

Thanks all.
