2x 7800GTXOC 256mb sli, or 7800GTXOC 512mb?

Need some advice on what video card to buy? Wanna buy/sell/trade some equipment? This is the place to ask.

2x 7800GTXOC 256mb sli, or 7800GTXOC 512mb?

Postby Oreo » Nov 20th, 2005 at 6:07 am

The 7800GTXOC 512MB cards are out, but is it really worth the extra $250? a 7800GTXOC 256mb is around $499 and the 7800GTXOC 512mb is $749. Here are the two links, is it really worth the extra cost or would it be smarter to hit up 2x 256mb and SLI them fuckers for $1,000?

512, then in a year or 2 you can grab another 512 and still have a system that whill whomp ass. The 512 is clocked higher and runs cooler, 1300mhz vs 1700 and 450 vs. 550.

512. Then after some time you can buy another one when the price drops...because it will.

If you're a FSAA whore, get the 512 card - otherwise go with the dual 256 meg cards.

Well the whole point of upgrading to the new shit is so I can max graphics. Right now I have good fps, but my eye candy is low. I have 4x FSAA and 2x AA. I want to max both of them and have high quality graphics on and still reach the 60-90 fps marks on 1024 resolution. If I can do it with the 256 cards, I would rather do that, but the question was whether it was worth it or not to hit up the single 512 and then SLi that one in a few years. I wouldn't want to get 1 or 2 256 cards, then be wanting the 512 in another year, that would just be a bitch on the checkbook. I am definitely ready to spend the cash though to get a stomper.

The 512 will give you all the eye candy you want and probably more than SLI on the 256s. As I said before the 512 is clocked faster and SLI doesn't give a true x2. However even if the 256s beat a single 512 right now in a year or two it will be better to upgrade to an SLI 512 than buying a totaly new set of cards. After using SLI myself I see it as a way to prolong the value of your high end cards when new ones come out, thus if you are gonna spend the cash get the best on the market and then upgrade later.

Alright, sounds like a plan. Anyone know the depreciation on brand new cards? I know its $750 now, but how long do you think it will take to drop $100-$200 or more? Couple months, half a year?

It only took 1 year for the x800xl to go from $500 to $250.

Alright, looks like the plan will be to hit up the 512 in december or january, then sli it in a year.

Hahah, nothing lucky about it. I just don't have any monthly payments, so a job means money. Live with my parents to go to college and make the 70 mile commute per day to work and go to class, that way I avoid the $500 monthly fee of living on campus. Plus, I figure I will treat myself a nice upgrade, since I used tihs computer to the max for about 3 years now.

In which case I take it your useing AGP? If so I believe the top of the line may be the 6800's with the 256bit memory bus. Goes for bout $180.

But if your talking a PCI-E system, no idea.
I really need to change this sig

RAM is dirt cheap so put 1.5-2gigs in there or max it will take.

I'd put a 9800 Pro in it. Best bang for the buck on the AGP side. I still run mine and it runs BF2 and CS:S very nice. Especially since the last few patches of CS:S.

Yea, it's one of the only reasons I don't live on campus. The monthly payments and amount of money saved is tremendous.
