need help from web guru's (css/stylesheets)

Postby K2 » Jun 11th, 2006 at 2:46 pm

OK, check it out. I am finally moving the website AWAY from frames:

http://www.hardfought.org/hftest.php

It's IE and FF friendly, should look pretty much the same in both (yay finally lol :P )

I am using CSS to create a simple two-column page, with the nav links/banners in the left column, and everything else in the right. Here's the .css code:

Code: Select all

/* Hardfought Layout Stylesheet */

 a:hover {color: #00FF00; text-decoration: none; font-family: Tahoma;}
 a:link{color: #FFFFFF;text-decoration:none;font-family: Tahoma;}
 a:visited{color: #FFFFFF;text-decoration:none;font-family: Tahoma;}
 a:active{color: #FFFFFF;text-decoration:none;font-family: Tahoma;}
 a img {border: none; }

html {
 scrollbar-face-color: #333333;
 scrollbar-highlight-color: #222222;
 scrollbar-shadow-color: #111111;
 scrollbar-3dlight-color: #222222;
 scrollbar-arrow-color: #800000;
 scrollbar-track-color: #111111;
 scrollbar-darkshadow-color: #000000;
 }

body{
 margin: 0px;
 padding: 0px;
 background: #000000;
 color: #C0C0C0;
 }

#lh-col{
 position: absolute;
 margin: 4px 4px 4px 4px;
 top: 8px;
 left: 4px;
 bottom: 4px;
 width: 154px;
 height: 1900px;
 border: 1px solid #111111;
 background: #000000;
 background-image: url(../images/killsky_2.jpg);
 color: #C0C0C0;
 margin: 0px;
 padding: 3px;
 }

#rh-col{
 margin: 8px 4px 4px 174px;
 border: 1px solid #800000;
 background: #000000;
 color: #C0C0C0;
 padding: 3px;
 }

Now here's my main problem - I want whatever links you click on to the left, to open up in the right column, leaving the left column visible. Pretty much the same behavior as before w/ frames, but this time with no frames ;) As it stands right now, it just fills the entire browser with whatever you click on. Yuk. I've tried playing around with 'target=' on each link but I dont know what target to call to, if any.

Help! :P

You need to name your righthand column div:

<div id="rh-col" align="left" name="poo">

then do a target="poo" in the left hand links.
This may lead to some browser issues.

but I think what will happen is not the result you're looking for. i think i know what you're trying to do, and you won't be able to. The best you can do is make the left column into an IFRAME and the right into a named IFRAME and then linking the same way as you did with the DIV

the reason why i'm say that it probably won't work is that the right column would be fixed height, meaning it wouldn't expand the page when a user clicked on a link with longer content. if longer or wider content appears than the content will be cut off (or you can turn on scroll bars but then you'll have two sets of scrollbars, those for the browser window and those for DIV or the IFRAME).

I just had to code something like this for a website i just developed.

uh... er... Does your host support server side includes?

http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/docs/tutori ... ludes.html

I used them for header/footers before. Dunno why they wouldn't work for left menu's.

I used them here for header: www.eoent.com

I haven't done any SSI in a while, but I would assume that you just add your include into the tables and it populates accordingly, but again... Its been a long time.

Me and puppy took a look at using SSI - to do it correctly, would take a huge overhaul of everything, including every single file in the msgboard that you view. No fuckin way ;)

Ah well... learn to become content with frames people.

You could just use a CMS :) You could port most of your stuff over to Joomla with little problem. Joomla supports iFrames also. And there are a gob of good CS and game server components for it. At least give it a look see.

I'm using it here, and I pull my forums into an iFrame. www.tulsalan.com

Its a great way to force people to view the main page/news also.

Catalyst = "Not taking all my gaming time to develop a site related to gaming and never getting to actually game."

Joomla = easy, fast to install, simple to template, and feature packed.

Can I download an online payment, seating chart, tournament, teaming, catering module for it like the one I'm currently using? Until it gets more module/component developers I'm not interested. If I wanted to code my own modules I'd use Plone anyway.
