Indeed, those familiar with traditional MMO combat will be very surprised by Warhammer Online -- in addition to no crowd control and no long-term buffs, there are minimal stealth options. In Warhammer Online, you're expected to get in there and mix it up.


The PvP game in Warhammer Online is "realm vs. realm" and is based off a similar system from Mythic's previous MMO, Dark Age of Camelot. According to Hickman, it's been refined to take advantage of the hard-learned lessons from that game. The biggest lesson to come out of Dark Age of Camelot is that most people don't really hate PvP -- they hate meaningless PvP that comes from left field and interrupts them while they're having fun with something else. Give players something to fight over or an objective to pursue and they'll happily slaughter each other all day long.


Player avatars don't walk through each other in Warhammer Online. That means it's very important not to get stuck between other players and that position and protecting other players is going to be extremely important.

Sweet, not only do you get zerged, but now you can also be blocked in by the zerg! :P

Even if it turns out to not be what I want I'd still probably buy it, mostly because it's made by Mythic, and I really enjoyed DAoC for quite a long time.

While waiting around for it though, I've been in both closed betas for Lord of the Rings Online, and I pre-ordered the game a couple weeks ago, though LotRO isn't a highly PVP based game, it's more based on the books and questing, grouping, etc. But it is a pretty cool game.

Can't wait for WAR. Eq2 pvp on my server tanked, and there isnt more than 30 people out PvPing at primetime.

If I werent going to Iraq again so soon, I'd probably jump on this. No/limited crowd control, no clipping, no buff-bots, PvP/RvR orientated play, and the use of a PPU... sounds like a winner.

Hell, I might jump onboard anyways and found another HF guild, and then let you guys hash it out while I'm away :P

Cool, as long as I don't end up the only person left in the HF guild for 4-5+ months again. :P

Actually it's more likely most or all of SotU will be playing WH when it's released, though I did end up back and forth a lot between HF and SotU doing keep takes and such.

I will likely be moving my EQ2 guild over to WAR. We were going to try Vanguard: SoH but Sony jumped on the financial bandwagon to bail Sigil out and forced them to release the game LONG before Sigil was finished. Result, shitty game, more bugs than any other game i have ever seen, and tons of exploits that they are not taking any measures to fix. That doesn't mean a whole lot from a PvE aspect, but from the PvP standpoint it breaks the servers indefinitely.

On a side note, i see they moved the launch date from a hopeful November, to Q3 of 2007. Anyone got a scoop on when they plan so ship this puppy?

Last I heard was a possible beta launch around September 07, but I don't recall where I read that, it was on the website as far as I can remember, but I may have gotten confused.

A former student of mine from the Guildhall at SMU is now working at Mythic, doing world creation for Warhammer Online. Needless to say, I will be pinging him for an early beta invite.

WoW is way too PvE-centric for me.

I'm sad to see Mythic producing Warhammer, who besides Mav still plays DaoC? They'll probably just rework the DaoC engine, so Warhammer will be levelling hell. The one MMORPG I was looking forward to got axed, then picked up by a company I have no respect for......

Happened a few days ago. They decided to push back the release date beause as they are progressing through the creation, they felt some of the stuff they did early-on wasn't as well-designed (or w/e) as the latest content they've created, so they are going back and revamping some of it.

No it's a newer warrior ability that's on a timer.

Btw Wid, all archer classes got a major overhaul in a recent patch. You might be interested.

I confirmed via interview in MMO Games magazine that Warhammer will just be a reworked DaoC. Way to break the mold Mythic.....

Woot! Just found out that I was invited into the Beta...I was probably accepted at least weeks ago maybe months ago wtf.

Oh well, can't wait to get home and install.

It's still a closed beta too though so I can only acknowledge that there is in fact a beta and that I was invited lol.

It's typical EA, get license for name, then make something totally unlike original just slapping the name on it. Mythic is crap, DaoC is what like 6 years old now and hunters still can't climb trees (despite this being in the fucking manual that came with the game). It's one thing the verbally say we're planning to add a skill/ability/spell, it's totally another to put it in the manual as an existing skill/ability/spell and never actually put it in the game. That and nerfing classes based on PVP whining is always bad news, I love having my PVM character gimped because some pussy whined about an ability in PVP......

combine EA and Mythic and expect anything decent? YRS, the only level based MMO in the last few years that seems interesting to me is Champions Online.
