Any HF NWN 2 plans?

Postby WidowMaker » Jun 12th, 2006 at 11:42 pm

Any plans to have a HF NWN 2 server? If so, let me know. I would like to be involved.

YES. When's it goin gold, I havent checked in a long while.

I sorta have plans to do a total conversion of Nethack (http://www.nethack.org), but I'd definitely need a team to do it right.

Sounds kinda interesting. If Hardfought was hosting a server I might be able to get into that :)

Actually Nad, NWN is one of the most modded games around. There are entire persistent universes, basically mini-MMO's, that are hosted on many servers.

I'd need your expertise Burz, cuz NWN2 now uses C# instead of C++ for all of its scripting...

Mav,

People don't waste their time making mods for a game that nobody plays. There are alot of people playing NWN mods, actually. Just because it didn't go over big with the FPS-centric HF crowd doesn't mean alot of people don't like it.

Reply A: Net hack scares me.
Reply B: NWN was an awesome game, though i still have it i never bought the expansions so i never got much out of it. And the mods were always a little fun!
Reply C: I play DND and it can be modded to what ever needs there are. I used the DND engine to run a modern realm at one point. My current DM friend has some issues, and ive stoped playing so consistantly because of them. Game is still an awesome little side quest how ever.

Hey check it out... Bioware just released a new premium module 3 weeks ago called 'infinite dungeons' - they hired on a community scripter to make this mod, turns out this guy started work on a random dungeon generator and had a pretty good version going but was limited by some short-comings in the toolset. Bioware gave him the extra abilities he needed (patch 1.67) and used his expertise to make ID.

In a nutshell, as you go from one level to the next, the module auto-generates a new dungeon on the fly, completely random. And I mean everything is random... the layout, where traps are and what type, the mobs and what loot they drop, *everything*. It also scales the mobs and encounters based on 1) your level and 2) the number of ppl in your party and their levels as well. So you can start out as a level 1 whatever and play straight thru to level 40 and more.

This is HUGE, the reason being is that to pull off a total conversion of a game like Nethack, having the dungeon randomly generate itself on the fly is one of the key factors that made that game so enjoyable - never the exact same game twice. And the mobs would scale accordingly based on your level. The latter wasnt that big a deal, that scripting for NWN has been around for ages. But before this came about, I was planning on literally making about 100+ different levels, and making a script to randomly pick a level as you descended.

The same author who provided the scripting to make Infinite Dungeons work has stated that he definitely plans to create the same thing for NWN2 ;)

You can check out the new module on Biowares site, I dont remember the link, but just do a search for infinite dungeons, or do a search for 'random dungeon generator' on http://nwvault.ign.com .
