Hah, but what it takes to even validate the need for such a connection is nuts. The only real reason to like the fact that internet is getting so fast is the price reduction it incurs on slower speeds.
A city in NC was the first to actually offer 10gbps (Sept. 2015), and the first anything to actually have it was a college located in that city. These services are typically offered in more-so rural cities that have city-designed/run ISPs/networks.
Even back in August last year Verizon was saying that their FiOS could possibly eventually boast 40-80gbps speeds, though I haven't really seen much talk about that since (honestly haven't even really looked into it anymore, stupid speeds that are entirely unnecessary on a residential level (or even on a business level in most cases)), lol.

I'm about to get Google Fiber, 1Gbps. Makes me feel not as special.

Well, I'm a little disappointed by the downstream, but the upstream is pretty consistent with what I've seen from other Google Fiber installs in Kansas City.

Yawn 600Mb/s... Who could possibly live with such third world internet...

I know comcast offers 2Gbps synchronous connections here, but it involves a fair amount of setup and special equipment, and is usually reserved for commercial building setups. I should call and ask just to see what's doable here for a residential home.

I think I'm being limited by the choices of testing servers on Ookla. When I test using Google Fiber's test, I get ~930Mbps upstream and downstream. To test this theory, I ran another Ookla speed test using a different host, and scored a fair amount better:
