Well, it's official

Postby K2 » Jun 4th, 2009 at 11:52 pm

I'm still obligated to active duty military service until June 10th, but today was my final out-processing. I even have a new DoD ID card that says I'm a civilian. Going in tomorrow to say my good-byes, and that's it (I'm on terminal leave for the remaining days I have left). I'm done as an active duty Army Infantry soldier. Hellllooooo civilian life :P

I saw the title of this on the front page and was damn near certain that he was gonna say he is gonna be dad. I don't know which is a scarier idea. that or him a civilian.

Thanks everyone. It's gonna be a lil weird readjusting back to a normal civilian way of life, but I'm sure it'll go smooth. I've got the next 2.5 months off, then I start back to college (first time in almost 20 yrs) the end of August. Hopefully by then I'll have my NCO persona out of my system... god help the lil punk that tries to fuck with me if I don't ;)

Dang.. gonna miss it keith? My grandfather was in until he decided to take a small military vessel out to sea and show his family. Like 30 something years in navy down the drain. What a drinking problem he had, funny thing is tho, It was in Key West, Fla and he actually went into Cuban waters. it was in the 60's lol The Navy made him retire early instead of being discharged

No I wont miss it. I should add though that I am doing a small stint with the VT national guard - 1 yr, 3 mo and 25 days, or 16 weekends. It's only to eat up the rest of my inactive ready reserve time (it's an option granted to prior active duty combat vetrans). And since VT has it in their books that incoming combat vets are non-deployable for 2 yrs, I'm golden. So technically, I am still 'military' but anyone that's ever been in the guard or reserve will tell ya, you're pretty much a civilian unless you get spun up. Which I wont.

I did 6 years in the guard, better check the paperwork. Just because you're non-deployable doesn't mean they can't activate you and keep you stateside for 2 years. And as I'm sure you're already familiar with, Stop Loss can make a year into 2 by presidential order.

Stop loss is being phased out - it wont exist anymore come next year.

As per my contract, I can only be activated for state emergencies - so for Vermont, that would be helping out if a big blizzard came thru, etc. No problems helping out with that. It explicitly states in my contract, I cannot be deployed anywhere overseas for 24 months. And my contract is less than that. pwned.
