ZOMFG

Has this country lost its mind?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060914/ap_ ... ter_arrest

A bounty hunter goes into mexico, grabs a wanted fugitive and brings him to justice, then turns around three years later and arrests him for it? WTF? I tell you what. We'll give you Duane Chapman when you take back the 12 million illegals that cross the border. Then we can talk about justice.

Per the article, they arrested them when they did it, 3 years ago. Dog and company though did not show up for their court date after makeing bail.

That wasn't in the original article. That, I find ironic. Good for them for stiking to their morales though. Mexican authorities wanted the rapist turned over to them (since he probably had dozens of them bought out), but instead they chose to go to jail over letting this guy possibly get away.

Although I agree with you that Luster most probably did have the local law paid off, and that was the reason that the Chapmans would refuse to hand Luster over, I wouldn't quite say the Chapmans were standing up for their morals in jumping bail .

Whether the law in Mexico is corrupt or not, if your a bounty hunter with the apperant strong convictions for the law and such that Dog displays in his show, then you go and show up for your court date. After all, Luster was probably already in jail in the US by the court date. The US consulate should have also stepped in and helped Dog with this case considering who Luster was and all. Perhaps they still will, in order to make sure the Mexican justice system doesn't screw over someone who has become abit of an icon.

Interesting. They were talking about this on the radio today, and they never mentioned that the actual kidnapping charge was 3 years ago. Of course, that particular show repeatedly reports things as news that they actually just heard from a single caller...

I miss the good 'ol days when the bounty hunter would have brought only they're heads back and the Hawiian judge would have told Meh-hi-co to STFU.

The irony in the whole case is that this is the event that put them on the map in the first place and what got them their show. The rapist was the heir to the Max Factor fortune.

Truly ironic.

Bounty hunter hunts down a bail jumper.
BH gets arrested then jumps bail.
BH becomes celebrity for arresting bail jumpers.
BH's arrest for bail jumping makes headlines due to his celebrity status.

And hopefully and very ironically
BH's celebrity status helps BH get away with jumping bail.

Update.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/09/23/dog.b ... topstories

Bounty hunting is a crime in Mexico. (Orginized crime must love that)

Chapman is said he would offer an apology, pay a fine, forfeit the bail he posted in Mexico and make a charitable contribution, Hart said.

"What he's prepared to do is take responsibility for not having to stay around to face the charge," he said.

Chapman posted about $1,300 for his release, and based on "flawed legal advice" thought he could leave the country and Mexican authorities would have no further interest in him, Hart said.
