got barbed by a ray - wonder if the toxins in his body finally built up enough to tip him over brink. When you make your living/hobby doing dangerous things, you are probably going to die sooner than average.

The barb on the ray was said to hit him in the heart. So i'm told atleast. either way, its totaly suck.. i'll have to watch the show they are bound to put on animal planet about it..

*sigh*

stung through the heart by a sting ray. went into cardiac arrest on the boat. died. i always admired for being truely passionate about his work - he always looked like he was having fun.

of all the dangerous animals he dealt with, rubbing poisonous snakes around his face, running around with crocs ... it was a friggin sting ray that did him in.

I've seen stingrays (spotted eagle stingrays to be exact) plenty of times while scuba diving... they are actually rather intelligent creatures, especially the larger ones (mantas). And like most animals in the wild, they wont fuck with you unless you fuck with them first.

Look up stingrays on the 'net. Just about every reference you'l find about 'em will say that they *rarely* use their stinger in self defence... they are more apt to swim away, even if under attack. The only times they ever directly sting a human is if they are stepped on (the smaller varitey that hang out under the sand in shallow beaches) or if you are directly and purposely aggitating them in some other way.

The dumbass had it coming - remorse factor of 0.

I think the guy did what he truely loved and he knew the risks. That's admirable in my book.

To me, fucking with wildlife is just filming them at all. Some guy aiming a giant camera at them surely has to freak them out. I'm amazed at how they even get some of the footage. But then we'd have no cool "Discovery" shows to watch in HD.

I'm no fan of his by any means. I've never seen a show of his before.

some beaches where i've surfed at you do a shuffle walk when you're walking out. shuffling your feet through the sand as you walk causes the sting rays to move so you dont' step on them.

i admired him a lot. he spent a good portion of his money on conservation efforts - purchasing huge tracts of land for wild animals to use and donating to many organizations. I think it's a pretty big loss.

What freaks out fish and other undersea life the most are the bubbles you make when you exhale with your breathing apparatus. What a lot of the underwater photographers use to get those impossible close-up shots are rebreather units - produces virtually zero bubbles.

I'd love to buy a setup like that, but I think I'd rather save the money for a down payment on a house

Damn, thats sad. I'm sure if it wasnt the death of old age this is how he wouldve wanted to go. Doing his work. I'm upset that his son is goin to grow up without a father...

Another week or two and there will be a few hundred photochops out.

*EDIT*

I feel like I should also say, I really loved watching him almost die everyweek. On our honey moon my wife and I watched a Steve Irwin marathon in between sex romps. He was one of the first people to take such a hands on approach to showing deadly animals on TV. He'll be missed :(

I find it odd that your 4000th post was about sex and Steve Irwin

He was kind of a wierd guy, for sure. But he was a good guy too, and certainly worked for a noble (and much needed) cause. He didn't deserve this.

I think it was a secret mechanical sting ray powered by oil sent to assasinate him for his conservation works.

Is everyone aware that in his contract, in the event of his death by an animal is caught on film, he DEMANDED that it be aired so that people can see the danger of animals?
