Bunch o’ news weekend

By K2 on April 27th, 2001 at 11:34 pm EST

Hiya gang… I got a lot of stuff to share with you this time around. Without further adieu, let’s get right to what a lot of you have been discussing lately on the message forums…

Game statistics – yes, I am aware of the inconsistencies with the way halfStats is recording stats. Part of this is due to the way ½ life records game logs in the first place (no getting around that one)… and the other may very well be the way I personally am retrieving stats from the game server. Before, with Intelistats, it would go directly to the game server and parse the log files from the CS ports log directory. When I switched to halfStats, I pointed it to the logs that CSCop would generate from remotely monitoring TK’s. The reason why I did that was because halfStats could just parse the stats directly from the web-server’s hard drive, instead of having to get them first from the game server. Since, over the course of a month of constant playing time, the logs can grow to over 200MB (not kidding on that one :-P), that would save halfStats about… oh, 5-10 extra minutes on every parse cycle. It’s very possible that the logs CSCop generates are not entirely complete… I dunno for certain. I do think getting the logs directly from the game server will be more accurate. Also, as a checks and balance/quality assurance test, I’m going to try and run 2-3 different stats programs on the same logs at the same time and compare each programs output. HalfStats will still be the only one visible to the public starting out. I’ll keep you guys and gals posted on how that goes… check the msg forums for updates on that.

Still speaking of game stats… I am now posting game stats of the Hardfought CTF/DM/TDM Match Quake3 port, using GeigerCounter 2, release candidate 5. You can see these stats by following the ‘Game Statistics’ link to the left. The layout is *sharp* and has full support for the OSP mod. The initial layout is a bit confusing at first but there is quite a bit of info to be had there… it’s currently displaying stats as far back as the end of February. There’s still some more tweaking I wanna do to the Quake3 stats but I’ll have to find some time with the creator of GeigerCounter to do that. Those stats are updated once an hour… but it wont show when they were updated until there’s new activity on the port.

Nexus defended our #1 spot on the OGL Quake3 CCTF ladder again last week, defeating delusional Reality by a score of 15-0. Demo’s and screenshots of the match are posted in the usual places… good game to dR. The OGL CCTF ladder has been pretty quiet since then with no new challenges since… although Immortal COIL and MaD have signed back up as of the past 24 hours… things are about to get a bit more interesting there I imagine :-)

The newly formed Nexus CounterStrike squad is due to have it’s first practice tomorrow night… w0oP!! HaDeS has been playing quite a bit and for having only started playing CS about a week ago… she’s doing damn good in my opinion… a lot better than I did starting out. Between watching how well she is progressing and also how well the rest of my teammates do on the public server makes me think we’re going to do pretty well overall as a team. If your clan is interested in having some scrimmages with us, just let us know, we’ll be ready soon.

Server updates – sprays have been re-enabled on the public CS port. They were disabled temporarily due to the amount of the offensive X rated content of the custom sprays file. I cant (at the moment) police exactly what gets uploaded and what doesn’t… but I am gonna ask everyone not to use any overly-offensive sprays on the server. If you’re caught using one, don’t be surprised if you’re kicked/banned from the server… fair warning, folks. I’m no prude, but I have had several complaints from people who play on the server that do not enjoy having to view some of these sprays, and after seeing some of them myself, I don’t blame them. Since some of these spray *will* make it onto the server eventually… if you do not want to view them, disable downloads in your config.cfg file and remove your existing custom.hpk file from your \cstrike directory. This is the best solution I can think of for now until I can find a .hpk editor that works.

More server updates… heh :-) I’ve added a couple new adminmod scripts to both the CS ports. One allows everyone to use /admin_playerinfo as a substitute for /admin_userlist… the layout is much more ordered and is easier to read. The second allows users to use the IRC-style /me switch in chat mode… so by starting your chat with /me will make what you say appear in third-person instead of first-person. Try it out, you’ll see what I mean :-P Also… and this has been up for awhile… users can use /admin_who to see who has admin privileges on the server and who has a reserved slot.

Personal stuff – I finally found a fuckin’ job!! After almost four weeks of phone calls, resume submittals and interviews, I start a new job with IBM on May 8th as a Level 3 field technician. Hands on work this time around… answering phones day in and day out with Nortel for a year was getting *old*, plus the pay is better :-) Special thank to Ronin for hooking me up with the in-house job posting :-)

Oh yeah, almost forgot… new and improved voting poll to the bottom right, go vote if ya haven’t already. Have a good weekend gang, see ya online.

Nexus CS Team, stats back up, more…

By K2 on April 21st, 2001 at 1:03 am EST

Got lot’s of news for ya today folks… :-P

Nexus has finally created a CounterStrike team… after weeks of b0ba buggin’ the hell out of me to help kick one off, we’ve got enough players to make a team. Original Nexus clanmates from our Quake3 team include myself, HaDeS and b0ba… new players are Arctek, PUPPY, Ronin, Texas Assassin, jane and Relic. Next time you see these folks, tell ’em congrats :-) As of now, we’re not taking on anymore players… we wanna take time to get to know each other as a team, learn each others strengths and weaknesses, etc. We may add a couple more people later on down the line… I’ll post news about it here if and when we decide to do so. I’ll have a roster up soon with everyone’s info and in-game screenshots.

Game statistics are back up as of this evening!! Heheh… I got rid of Intelistats and am now using halfStats, which I think I like much better from an admin’s point of view. Clan rankings are gone but in it’s place are – awards and tracking of hostages touched/rescued/killed, bombs planted/defused and VIP escapes, sorting the player rankings by either skill, kills, deaths, efficiency or kills per hour, WON id tracking of players (so if you change your name, it knows you by your WON id, so your stats stay with you regardless… and it also displays those aliases :-) ) and then awards for things like most connects, most likely to get shot… stuff like that. Start clicking around on the available links, there’s a lot of info to see on the stats. Something else that I think you’ll like… instead of seeing just the top 50 players and having to do a search for the rest, the player rankings will now show *everyone* … all the way up to 10,000 separate and distinct players. The only downside to all this, is that halfStats only shows data from April the 14th to present… it wont read the backed-up Intelistats logs unless I rename them by hand… and I’m not gonna do that for 4000+ files. When the end of the month rolls around, I’ll do my best to combine the last Intelistats ranking with the halfStats ranking for the Hardfought CS Hall of Fame awards for April… we’ll see how that goes. One final note… public stats are still updated once an hour, and I’ll have the match port stats up soon.

Our server reservation system now has a much-desired feature added to it, thanks to PUPPY… :-) From now on, whenever you make a reservation on the Hardfought CounterStrike Match port, when you create the password of your choosing to save the reservation, that password will also *become* the join password of the match port for the duration of your time reserved. Example – you make a reservation of the CS match port for May 1st, from 9pm to 11pm CST, and you set the password as ‘test’… at exactly 9pm CST, the reservation software will change the join password of the server to what you made it to be (test)… and at 11pm CST the password will revert back to the default password, which most of you know to be the word ‘matchm0de’. Here’s the catch… later this evening, I’m changing the default password on the CS match port, and I’m not telling anyone what it is. This means, if you wanna play on the CS Match port, you *have* to make a reservation in advance to play there. If you need extra time on the port before a match to warm up, be sure to include that time in the reservation. Right now this system works only on the CS Match port, but by next week this will also hold true for the Hardfought Quake3 CTF/DM/TDM Match port as well. If you make a reservation, but forget your password, get in touch with me, I can get it for you… but please take 10 seconds to write it down somewhere first, tho :-P

To wrap up… the Nexus Quake3 team plays delusional Reality tomorrow night to defend our #1 spot on the OGL CCTF ladder, sp expect another news post this weekend about that. Have a good weekend folks, see ya online.

Happy Easter!!

By K2 on April 15th, 2001 at 9:29 pm EST

Happy Easter folks… hope you had a good one. Tip of the day – don’t eat the multi-colored eggs…

Nexus played our OGL CCTF match against the Masters at Destruction last Friday night… we defended our #1 title again, defeating MaD 16-5. Representing Nexus was myself, HaDeS, b0ba and bob (hey look, bob is back :-P). The match was actually pretty good except for two things… 1) HaDeS kept disconnecting to the point where she couldn’t play anymore and CyBorge had to take over for her, and 2) MaD.Jaguar decided to make a complete fool of himself during and after the match by claiming that HaDeS was actually a ringer, we were hacking his system during the match, and that b0ba was using a bot. Hrmm… someone can’t handle losing too well, can they… ROFL!! Fortunately the rest of Jaguar’s teammates did not share his views… the rest of clan MaD were very good sports about the whole thing, so good game to you MaD, well fought. A spectator demo and also a demo from my perspective can be found in our ‘Files’ section and as always, a screenshot can be found in our ‘Battles’ area. Oh yeah… check out this msgboard thread about the whole deal – http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~cctf/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=000535 … interesting read :-)

YES I finally put the new custom maps up on the Hardfought CounterStrike ports… which most of ya have already found out I imagine. So dammit, go download them if ya haven’t already! :-P I’ve also installed a new TK monitor on the pub CS port, called CSCop… and it’s bad-ass. I like it much better than ServerSpy, plus it’s free, plus you can write your own custom scripts for it if you know visual basic. There’s still one or two things I wish it did that it doesn’t do right now, but I suppose I should just learn VB so I can make my own scripts eh? :-) If someone TK’s you on accident, just type ‘forgive tk’ in chat mode and CSCop will forgive the person that TK’ed you… and no, there isn’t a ‘punish tk’ feature ;-)

To wrap up… HaDeS and I went to the CPL/Speakeasy.net CounterStrike Tournament Friday night after our CCTF match to take a look around. Not quite as big as the Babbages event, but it was still pretty cool… several hundred CS players from around the world to play CounterStrike (and Tribes2, and Quake1/2/3, and Black & White, etc). I’d post pics… but really, most of them would look just like the Babbages pics I took… oh well.

Have a good weekend gang, catch ya later…

Web site back home, new CS maps, etc

By K2 on April 10th, 2001 at 9:55 pm EST

Wow… the DNS update for nexus.hardfought.org happened much earlier than anticipated. Had to bring the web content back home about four hours early :-) Everything appears to be in working order, including the game stats… I’m sure everyone is happy to see those back up and running ;-) If ya happen to notice anything not working as it should (msgboard not posting messages, reservation database not accepting reservations) please lemme know. Ok… on to the news…

You remember those custom maps I mentioned a couple weeks ago… you know, the ones you’re supposed to download ASAP because they were gonna be added to the CS server soon? Heheh… no I didn’t forget about them. I will be putting them up on the server tomorrow afternoon. In case you forgot what they were, here’s the list – as_forest, cs_office_old, and the es_ map pack, which includes es_frantic, es_trinity, es_cabor, es_cell, es_hide, es_jail, es_raid and es_village. These maps are still available for download in our ‘Files’ section, so if ya haven’t already… go get ’em.

The Hardfought CounterStrike public and match ports were upgraded today… first, both were patched to CS 1.1c… this fixes a bug to where players could use a certain exploit to make themselves invulnerable. Also… Adminmod has been upgraded to 2.50c on both ports, and I’ve also installed a few custom scripts on each. Friendly fire is still votable on the match port, and both spam more information to players as they log in. There’s a couple more scripts, but they are admin-only :-)

Nexus has an OGL CCTF match coming up at the end of this week. I’ll post news about the outcome of it later this week, along with some other juicy tidbits :-P See ya online…
